The History and The Vision

In 1928, Greenwood Mennonite School opened its doors to 30 students. In the face of government challenge and on the verge of the Great Depression, GMS established itself with the construction of the “Little Brown School” in 1932. Over the next hundred years, the GMS community sacrificed to keep it in operation - from farm projects and building spec houses to our annual Spring Festival and DE State Fair booth. As our founders physically and spiritually built a school to honor God, GMS continues its commitment to educate students in a Biblical worldview, from an Anabaptist perspective, in Christian values, and in relevant academics to be effective servant leaders in the world.

In the early 1990s the school saw significant growth and six additional classrooms were added along with the gymnasium and cafeteria. Over the past decade, GMS has once again experienced growth, with a 45% increase in enrollment – nearly 100 additional students! At this point, we are out of space, overcrowded, and turning families away. Our desire is to continue to be good stewards of the resources that we have been given so that GMS can flourish in the future. In order to welcome our wait-listed students and to more effectively educate our current students, the school requires additional classroom and office space.

As GMS did a generation ago, we are ready to expand our educational space, our programs, and our impact on current and future students to serve as Christ’s followers in our community, workforce, and world. Through the addition of 11 classrooms, GMS will be able to (1) increase academic offerings and opportunities for students, (2) maintain academically appropriate class sizes, and (3) increase the number of mission-aligned students. Additional families in our geographic region desire a GMS Christian education for their children. Meeting the needs of these families is important. The more students, the greater the impact. GMS no longer wants to say to mission-aligned families, “there is no room in the inn [school]” (Luke 2:7).

The vision forward - additional learning space to expand educational opportunities - includes the following exciting enhancements to the current Greenwood Mennonite School Campus:

  • 11 NEW CLASSROOMS - Will enable GMS to maintain appropriate class sizes, expand educational opportunities, and facilitate additional enrollment.

  • EXPAND OFFICE SPACE & CONFERENCE ROOM - Centralize office personnel to facilitate collaboration.

  • ADDITIONAL STUDENT & STAFF-SPECIFIC BATHROOMS - Includes bathrooms for students as well as a separate bathroom for staff.

  • LOBBY PROVIDING INCREASED FLEXIBILITY & ACCESSIBILITY - Provides a space to gather with increased flexibility and wheelchair accessibility.
