Greenwood Mennonite School has always tried to keep tuition cost as
low as possible. We feel as though a Christian education is a very
important part of a child’s upbringing, and want to make it
affordable for as many families as possible.
We have managed to keep our tuition cost low through several
programs. One of these is our annual fundraisers which make up
approx. 8 – 10% of our operating budget.
The proceeds’ from these fundraisers are split to help with
different programs we have in place. 60% of money raised goes for
day-to-day operations. 30% is slated for Capital Improvements on our
buildings and facilities, and 10% goes into an endowment fund which
is designed to earn interest in hopes of some day providing major
scholarships for qualifying students.
GMS has Five Major Fundraiser Events each year
SPRING FESTIVAL – Held the first
Saturday in June @ GMS, this event attempts to create a festival
feel that attracts both, the GMS community as well as the
surrounding towns and cities. The festival is known for food, live
entertainment, softball tournament, petting zoo, & lots of kid
activities, etc. This is always a family oriented event that brings
in the crowd. We are always open to new ideas for this event.
FALL AUCTION – Held normally in mid-
November, this is the oldest fundraiser that GMS maintains. The
Auction has stood the test of time. The day starts with an
All-you-can-eat breakfast and progresses into a full-fledged
auction. The items that are auctioned vary from homemade furniture,
quilts, autographed items, both new and used equipment, services,
meals, vacations, & many various items, that are all donated by many
local people & businesses. Local Auctioneers’ volunteer their time
to help GMS.
GMS GOLF TOURNAMENT – Held in October,
the GMS Golf tournament was started several years ago to capture the
love of golf with the passion to help GMS. Each year approx. 15 – 20
foursomes take on the challenge of a local golf course. This has
been a good addition to our fundraising program. The competition
becomes evident as family members, businesses and co-workers all
compete for low score, closest to the pin, longest drive, etc. This
past year the first team made up solely of GMS students took to the
field.
RACE FOR EDUCATION – This event held in
April gets the entire student body involved. Pledges are obtained
from family, friends, relatives, etc from all corners of the world.
Money is pledged on a “per-lap” basis as the students run, walk,
jog, etc around the school track during a given hour. The more laps
completed, the more money is raised.
This has been a great way to get relatives that
live away from the area an opportunity to participate in the
students activities.
SPEC HOUSE PROJECT - GMS has built and
sold houses on the open market for well over 15 years. This has been
a vital part of our fundraising efforts. The coordination of this
project is taken on by a local contractor, who has been a great
asset to the school. Since its inception GMS has built and sold
approx. 25 houses in the Kent/Sussex county area. Local contractors
are urged to use their skills to reduce the cost of houses being
sold.
